Executive Director of the Hospice of Texarkana Cindy Marsh, left, and President/CEO of Christus St. Michael Health System Christopher Karam, are photographed at St. Michael Hospital on Thursday. St. Michael has made a $100,000 donation to help Hospice of Texarkana with its in-patient center, which will be located on the CHRISTUS campus.
The Hospice of Texarkana Foundation has received an in-kind gift of $100,000 from the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System to benefit the Capital Campaign to build a Hospice Care Center in Texarkana, Texas.
In September, CHRISTUS Health Ark-La-Tex Board of Directors approved the location of a Hospice of Texarkana hospice house on the campus of CHRISTUS St. Michael Health Center.
"... We fully support this proposed new service for our community and wanted to offer financial support to help this dream become a reality," said Chris Karam, St. Michael president/CEO. "The referenced in-kind donation is a credit of $100,000 on the lease payment due when Hospice of Texarkana moves into the new facility."
For 24 years, Hospice of Texarkana/Hospice of Hope has provided home care to thousands of patients as a nonprofit service but as good as home care is, there are circumstances that require 24/7 attention for patients who are quickly approaching death or have symptoms that cannot immediately be controlled at home, said a Hospice of Texarkana official.
To meet that need, Hospice of Texarkana Inc. plans to build the area's first Hospice Care Center to provide highly specialized medical care in a home-like setting. Families will be encouraged to remain involved with their loved one and visiting hours will be liberal.
"We are so grateful for the continued support shown by CHRISTUS St. Michael Health Center to our organization. Their generous, in-kind gift ... is a large step toward fulfilling our campaign goal. Nine years ago, they had the foresight to collaborate with Hospice of Texarkana Inc. to provide end-of-life care to our community. This spirit of cooperation has allowed us to grow and prosper," Hospice Executive Director Cindy Marsh said.
The 22,000-square-foot building will provide for an unmet need. It will be located across from the St. Michael Health & Fitness Center on Morris Lane. The center will have 12 patient rooms with private terraces, a chapel, meeting rooms, counseling rooms, a children's playroom, a coffee shop and a guest shower and laundry. Hospice of Texarkana's administrative staff and nurses who currently work out of the location at 803 Spruce St. will also move to the facility.
Of the $6.5 million needed to complete the shovel-ready project, $1 million has been raised.
Hospice of Texarkana's inpatient center will create at least 12 new jobs and new, local contracts will be initiated. Additionally, acute hospital beds from area hospitals will be freed up as appropriate patients are referred.
