The Hospice Texarkana capital campaign has received a $100,000 grant from the Horace C. Cabe Foundation to help build a Hospice Inpatient Care Center.

"Over the years, there is no funding source that has been more generous to Hospice of Texarkana/Hospice of Hope than the Horace C. Cabe Foundation," said Hospice Executive Director Cindy Marsh.

The Cabe Foundation has chosen that the "Meditation Garden" bear its name when the facility is complete.

The Cabe Foundation, which makes grants to nonprofits and programs mainly in Arkansas and Texas, sees the Hospice of Texarkana Inpatient Center as a very worthy cause.

"It's a wonderful cause. Hospice has been here many years and it's been a lot of help to patients and to our community," said Lucille Cook, Cabe Foundation board member. "The board of the Horace Cabe Foundation is pleased they can make a grant like this."

Hospice Texarkana has been providing quality, end-of-life care for 24 years in the homes of thousands of families throughout this region.

The need for a hospice care center is evident because the nearest similar facility is more than 70 miles away, Marsh said.

The proposed 22,000 square foot, state-of-the-art medical facility will be across from the CHRISTUS St. Michael Fitness Center and a sign is on the property. Total project cost is $6.5 million dollars of which $1 million has been committed so far.

The building plans include 12 private rooms with accommodations for family members to spend the night, a chapel, a children's playroom, grief support meeting rooms, the Horace C. Cabe Meditation Garden and family living rooms.

"A dedicated end-of-life facility will allow families to be involved in the care of their loved one until the end, with specially trained staff members explaining changes and guiding families through the unfamiliar journey, said Marsh.

"We appreciate that the Horace C. Cabe Foundation has shown vision, courage and leadership through the years and now more than ever we thank them for their support," said Marsh.

Hospice of Texarkana/Hospice of Hope will care for 350 patients this year at home and in the hospital.

This isn't the first time the Cabe Foundation has helped Hospice Texarkana. About 10 years ago, the Cabe Foundation assisted the hospice in renovating its Spruce Street location.
